How to tell if your chimney is in need of repairs

By September 11, 2015 No Comments

Whether your house has a brick, concrete or steel chimney, it is highly recommended that you check its condition on a regular basis in order to quickly identify and resolve any structural issues. By doing so, you can prevent minor signs of chimney wear and tear from evolving into costly issues or potential fire hazards. To help you do so, listed below are the top three signs that indicate your chimney is in need of repairs:

1. White staining

The presence of white staining, or ‘efflorescence’ as it is also known, on your chimney indicates that there is excess moisture within the structure of your chimney. Although you can easily clean these crystalline deposit stains yourself, it is strongly advised that you consult with commercial heating contractors or a steeplejack who can fix the fundamental cause of this efflorescence.

2. Rust

If you notice rust around the firebox or damper of your fireplace then there may be excess moisture in your chimney. Moreover, if this rust is accompanied by pieces of chimney tile collecting within your fireplace then the flue lining of your chimney may also be fundamentally damaged and in need of targeted repairs.

3. Damaged wallpaper

Is the wallpaper near your chimney damaged? If so, then it is highly likely that there is excess moisture within the masonry of your chimney. In these instances you should refrain from using your fireplace immediately and contact commercial heating engineers who can repair the structure of your chimney.
